STATEMENT
I deconstruct before I construct:
My initial starting point is printed cotton fabrics with colors and patterns I feel attracted to. Different sections of the same pattern evoke different associations – I start to play and improvise. An image/pattern which at some point has already been defined as the final ‘product’ is cut into segments and ‘destroyed’, fringing the fabric destroys the initial pattern even further and reduces it to color dots. The layered fringes resemble a thick coat of heavily textured paint. This ‘soft’ and tactile section is then juxtaposed with a painted section in which I react to the color and pattern of the fabric, either lyrically or analytically – leading to indefinite possibilities regarding the number of different paintings resulting from the same fabric.
Fiber and painting are fused. Boundaries are blurred, not only between the fiber and the painted parts, but also between the work itself and the surrounding space, producing a sensuous environment.
