Artist Statement:
In my travels I get fascinated by nature’s formations – especially the ice-worn cliffs, rocks and stones in the archipelago. They feel warm and smooth under your bare feet on a sunny day, like an existential foothold for my being-in-the-world, and still so hostile when the sea is rough. They are naked and bare, hard and soft at the same time, lively in their embedded color variations but lifeless in their stability.
This stone was moved by melting ice thousands of years ago, like thrown to its place by a giant – and that’s what the ancient peoples used to believe. It is on the shoreline of a military island outside Helsinki, a forbidden place where only few can go, a safe haven for nature.
