“Can You See THE END?”
A solo show
The exhibition “Can You See THE END?” will be on display at the Broadway Gallery from September 1 to 15. A private reception will be held on Tuesday Sept 2 6-8pm, with special guest Yoram Morad, the Israeli Consul for cultural affairs, in attendance.

Ilana Dayan Zadik, an Israeli painter now based in New York first began her prolific career in 1992. After attending the Vitzo Art School in Israel, the artist continued to evolve her intuitive abilities and skills in many mediums eventually focusing her attentions on painting.

Zadik harnesses and manipulates perceptual reality in her work, using as a foundation startlingly vivid painterly sequences of events or phenomena such as life, nature and loss. Her work highlights elemental images, using dramatic ploys such as contrasts in scale, shifts in focus, and multiple narratives within one surface. Sensory perception for Zadik is a spiritual activity, one that leads to a heightened awareness of both nature and society—this thought process points to a new kind of realism and political commentary—one that is engaged with the actual processes of life.

Zadik’s recent work “Can You See THE END?” highlights her interest in iconography and representation. Portraying startling socio-political imagery of pivotal events the works are layered and composed according to a working method the artist sees as being natural to her. Zadik’s own awareness of the current Middle Eastern political climate has led to many visions and ideas that have later rung all too true.

Although Zadik possesses a strong ability to handle images of unimaginable horror in a sensitive and articulate manner, this truly is art as a panic attack. In each of Zadik’s working methods there is a balance between action and contemplation. Colors are also paired with their opposites: red complemented by green and blue with orange. Through such color contrasts Zadik is able to suggest a special narrative using color to define rather than merely complete the form.

The paintings have a visceral punch that obviates deconstructive analysis. In “Can You See THE END?” Zadik employs universally recognizable images to create complex perceptual experiences. The image and concept are dramatically juxtaposed and poetically structured in an attempt to heighten sensory experience, and in some cases to call it into question. Zadik’s extraordinarily, perceptive work offers a rich, convincing alternative experience for an art audience who may be disturbed by the self-indulgence, cynicism and thinness of so much contemporary art.
